Orchids are beautiful flowers and have many species. The most common occasion where orchids are used is in weddings. This may be used as a bouquet for the bride or as table settings. The flower is also sometimes used as corsage. Cheaper than roses, it is reflected on its care when one is growing the flower.
First of all, you will have to choose an orchid. As mentioned earlier, there are many types of orchids that are available. Choose one that is right for your environment and circumstances. It is best to purchase your first orchid from reputable orchid growers rather than a run-of-the-mill store. It may be more expensive but at least they will also be able to give you hints and tips regarding each species.
Next, you will have to choose a pot, or pots, for your orchid.
There are two things you will have to remember about orchids – water and light. Whether they are house plants or of the garden variety, you will still have to water them periodically. Most of the time, watering once a week will suffice. Most of the orchid plants are air plants though, which means that you can hang them inside a pot. This also means that you will be able to see their roots. An orchids’ root system are one of the most efficient water storing system given by Mother Nature.
As a guide, Phalaenopsis orchids tend to dry out in between watering. To check, simply stick your finger into the soil or medium. If it feels spongy, it’s okay but give it some water if it feels dry.
Epidendrum and Pahiopedilum orchids should be slightly moist and you should be able to water it twice a week.
Orchids that tend to dry out, such as Cattleya, Dendrobium and Oncidium, needs more work in between watering. The easiest way is to put the plant into a sink and allow water to run through the plant for about 20 – 30 seconds. Just remember to let the water drain from the flower prior to returning it to its pot.
Another note to be aware about is humidity. If it falls under 40%, you may need to spray it with a mist spray or use a humidity tray. As for light, your orchid would do well to get 4 hours of sun light a day. As a general rule though, orchid house plants would do well in medium light.
Finally, orchids grow well in normal house temperature. Orchids have an amazing ability to adapt so don’t worry if the temperature in your house fluctuates as orchids need it for the flowers to bloom.
